Visit Balfour Battery & Hoxa Head Coastal Battery, Orkney, Scotland

Balfour Battery (137 Battery) at Hoxa Head on South Ronaldsay was completed in April 1940 when it was armed with two 12-pounder guns. Each gun was mounted in one of two identical emplacements, with adjoining magazines and three level directing tower. In 1941 the guns were removed and each replace with a twin 6-pounder; more adept to engaging fast patrol or motor torpedo boats attempting to enter the Flow.
