View Original Description
Rotterdam Architects MVRDVrecently completed the “book mountain + library quarter” project, located in the market square in Spijkenisse, the Netherlands. The architect designed a bookcase mountain that contained a closed glass structure and a triangular roof with a surface area of 9,300 square meters. The corridors and platforms of the Bookshelf define the shape of the volume, and visitors enter the space of each shelf through a network of stairs. A 480-meter continuous path reaches the end of the reading room and coffee bar on the top floor, and people can look at the 360-degree view through the transparent roof. Other additional features in this space include environmental education centers, conference rooms, lecture halls, offices and retail stores. The architects use traditional Dutch farms as a form of architecture, with a traditional backdrop of agriculture in the villages. This enclosed area combines 42 social housing units, parking lots and public spaces to form a unified community. The elements of the side stone building are introduced into the transportation space of the library interior by brick paving.
