Bratislava, Slovakia
View Original Description
Slovakia is a scenic country, landlocked in Europe. Bratislava is the capital and the largest city of Slovakia, possessing a painstakingly restored historical center that displays a memorable collection of Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance churches, houses and palaces (the largest number of castles and chateaus per capita of any country in the world), cobblestone streets, fountains and pleasant cafes within a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Bratislava wears it significant cultural heritage on its sleeve with an assorted collection of museums, art galleries, palaces and churches scattered about the Historic district of the city. The city’s cultural calendar is jam-packed with music concerts and festivals. Mozart was a visitor to Bratislava and his influence is felt in the Viennese cast of its musical culture along with other notable composers who either visited or lived in the city including Haydn, Liszt, Bartók and Beethoven. Bratislava is the birthplace of the composers Johann Nepomuk Hummel, Dohnanyi Erno and Franz Schmidt. Shopping for locally produced crafts in the local markets, people watching from the aprons of interesting cafes and partaking of the therapeutic waters of the many mineral baths and spas scattered about the city are also popular among visitors.
Bratislava presents an interesting mix of the old and the new. The Slovakian capital is a beautiful old city dating back more than 2,200 years with a number of new real estate developments and modern complexes dotting the landscape between medieval towers. Bratislava was molded with many cultural influences from the Celts to the Romans, Germans and Hungarians. Six centuries of Roman influence left many architectural relics of that Roman in the old city, with perhaps the finest example the Bratislava Castle. Bratislava Castle was built above the Danube and has been converted into the home for Slovak National Museum. The Castle provides a magnificent view of the city and the river.
