Breiðdalsvík is a very small fishing town in East Iceland with a population of only 139, the town consists mostly of transient guests. The settlement was established in the 1880s but only came to prominence in the 1960s after the harbour was developed. Breiðdalur has a few accommodations as well as coffee shops and restaurants.
The spectacular Breiðdalur Valley is the longest and widest of the valleys in Eastern Iceland with majestic mountains rising on both sides to over 1100 metres.
The main activity in the town is fishing in the Breiðdalsá river and horseback riding, bird-watching and hiking..
