View Original Description
Budapest has the reputation of having something for everyone. The capital of Hungary, Budapest is actually the combination of two ancient towns: Buda is located on the west bank of the Danube River while Pest is found on the East bank. Budapest offers travelers inspiring museums, a world-famous opera culture, a vibrant nightlife, a collection of bathhouses with the trappings of world-class spas, unique and memorable art galleries and lush green parks. Cruising down the Danube River is a favorite activity affording eye-popping views of the beautiful cityscape. Budapest has a reputation as being one of the most affordable large cities in Eastern European. Budapest is a walking city and many of the main attractions can easily be accessed on foot. Public transportation includes buses, metro train lines, a trolley and a tram system. Budapest is also known for its thermal bath spas served by over a hundred natural springs with a nod toward its roots in the Roman Empire. Chief among those therapeutic sanctuaries is the Széchenyi Thermal Baths located in the City Park. A collection of islands that dot the Danube in and about the city are also worthy of exploration with Margaret Island perhaps the most popular.
The city displays wonderful examples of Classical, Romanesque, Gothic and Art Nouveau architectural styles. Two world-renown composers, Franz Liszt and Bélá Bartók, were Hungarian and Budapest boasts two opera houses and dozens of concert halls and theaters exhibiting the works of native sons as well as composers from all over the globe.
