Clint Eastwood was the mayor of this town for a time in the 1980’s. It’s a place where celebrities and movie stars can blend in with the rest of the tourists while experiencing world class spas, renowned art galleries, scenic vistas and be in close proximity to some of the best golfing experiences on the planet. Carmel-By-The-Sea, California is located oceanside, reached by world famous California Highway 1, right in the middle of the Monterey Peninsula.
Visitors to Carmel (the shortened name is typically used) find their days spent knocking around the quaint downtown area, following the mapped “Downtown Walk”, visiting the many galleries and shops in this small town with an established artist’s colony. The town has a rich history of support for literary and performing arts as well as sculptors, painters and musicians. The town offers such diverse festivals as the annual Carmel Bach Festival, presented over 2 weeks in mid-summer and the Shakespeare Festival held each fall in the famous Outdoor Forest Theater on the heels of a Broadway Production staged at the same open air theater during the preceding 5 weeks.
The “17 Mile Drive”, a toll road that runs from Carmel to Pacific Grove is a can’t-miss excursion. The winding road will lead you past scenic coastal views, through dense forests and alongside world famous golf courses at Pebble Beach. Deer and other wildlife are in abundance along the drive and bicycles are allowed on the road for no charge. The local beaches are also popular for sunbathing, frolicking in the surf or watching dramatic sunsets. The downtown area is fertile with restaurants offering a broad cross section of experiences from fine dining to fast food. The Monterey Aquarium is only a few miles away and is definitely worthy of your consideration.
Your dreams may include spending time in an ocean oriented small town that has been a favorite of artists, Presidents and royalty. If you are a fan of the arts and enjoy beautiful scenery then a trip to Carmel-By-The-Sea belongs on your list.
