Cataviña is a small town on Federal Highway 1 in Baja California, locateed 118 km (74 mi) south of El Rosario (371 km from Ensenada) and 106 km (66 mi) north of the junction of Federal Highway 12 to Bahía de los Ángeles. There is only a few motels and a couple of simple restaurants but everyone who travels this part of Baja knowns the town. The area outside of town is filled with building sized boulders and gigantic rock formations.
There are some 8,000- to 10,000-year-old cave paintingsa half mile north of town that reveal stories of the indigenous people in the area.
The Pemex station is closed permanently so keep gas in mind when traveling this section of hwy 1. The next gas station to the north is almost 2 hours away in El Rosario. To the south, the next station is in Villa Jesús Maria about 120 miles, over 2 hours away. A couple of private vendors selling gasoline from 55 gallon barrels.
It takes 7-8 hours to reach Cataviña from the U.S. border. Driving from Cabo (15 hrs) or La Paz (13 hrs) is much longer and usually is done in 2 days (or more).
The Pemex at Cataviña has long been closed. Sometimes gas is sold from drums next door to Cafe la Enramada.
