Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument, Wilberforce, Ohio
View Original Description
The Colonel Charles Young house is a National Historic Landmark in Wilberforce, Ohio. A military leader, Charles Young was born in 1864. He was the third African American graduate of West Point, the first black U.S. national park superintendent, the first African American military attaché, and the highest ranking black officer in the United States Army until his death in 1922. On March 25, 2013, President Barack Obama used the Antiquities Act to designate it the Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument, a unit of the National Park Service.
This two story brick structure was the residence of Colonel Charles Young (1864-1922), the third Black person to graduate from West Point and the highest-ranking Black officer of the First World War. Young also served as the first Black military attache in American history. A distinguished soldier and teacher of military courses, he was nationally known by the time of his death.
Alas, not all monuments are ready for primetime and after years of neglect, his home is closed to the public. Still, visitors can get a sense of his life in the archives of the nearby National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center, which houses a collection of his papers.
