Prypiat (Chernobyl), Ukraine
View Original Description
The Chernobyl Nuclear Plant near the now abandoned city of Prypiat in the Ukraine was the site of the most devastating nuclear accident known to the world on April 26, 1986 when explosions and fire following a test at the facility released significant quantities of radioactive matter and gases into the atmosphere. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 4,000 deaths have or will occur among the residents that were exposed to the highest levels of radiation as a direct result of that catastrophic event and other estimates range as high as nearly 1 million premature cancer deaths that will manifest worldwide due to the toxicity that resulted from this horrific accident. While the region around Chernobyl is now considered to be safe for visitors, very few permanent residents have returned to the region once home to about 100,000 people.
The site is open for tours by highly regulated guides with reservations mandatory well in advance of the desired date to view the notorious plant. Visitors are able to see the remains of the damaged reactor, the infamous Reactor #4, from a viewing platform 200 meters away from. The ruins of the abandoned city of Prypiat, once home to 50,000 people, is also included on tours of the devastated region along with deserted villages, farmhouses, cottages and countryside. Chernobyl Nuclear Plant is located 110 kilometers from Kiev, Ukraine and 16 kilometers from Ukraine’s border with Belarus. There are no local accommodations or restaurants, all visitors are bused in and out of the area within a controlled program.
Perhaps more like a nightmare than a dream, a trip to Visit Chernobyl in the Ukraine might just need to be on your list if you desire to see the evidence of devastation man can inflict upon itself while touring the countries that were previously part of the Soviet Union.
