Chiesa dei Santi Pietro e Paolo (San Pietro Caveoso), Matera, Italy
View Original Description
The church of Saints Peter and Paul, popularly known as the church of San Pietro Caveoso, is a Catholic place of worship in Matera, originally dating back to the end of the 13th century.
The construction of the current church dates back to 1218. The original church was carved into the rocky ridge that sloped from the summit, where the Madonna dell'Idris stands, down to the square, which was much smaller than it is today. Only a few traces of the rock church remain in the right aisle, where there is currently a niche with the statue of Saint John of Matera. The building has undergone modifications and renovations over the centuries, resulting in the loss of many of its original features. In the 17th century , the church was completely renovated with the addition of the current façade and the construction of the bell tower, while the interior was enlarged with the addition of side chapels and the replacement of the original wooden truss ceiling with a tuff roof.
In 1706 the church was reconsecrated, as indicated on a plaque, and was further modified: the spire was added to the bell tower, the interior was covered with stucco and decorations and a wooden false ceiling was placed under the tuff roof.
