Visit Chiesa della Madonna della Croce (Church of Our Lady of the Cross), Matera, Italy
The Madonna della Croce is a rock church located in the Murgia Materana , on the opposite side of the Gravina stream, with respect to the Sassi di Matera.
The church dates back to the 11th century and is entirely carved into the rock with a vaulted ceiling over two bays . On the ceiling of the first room, after the entrance, there is a carved equilateral cross, which gives the church its name. In the apse, there is a fresco of the Madonna blessing, seated on a throne, and with Child.
The path leading to the church starts from the viewpoint that can be reached from the Appian Way , taking about half an hour and with a fairly moderate level of difficulty.
