Visit Chiesa di San Falcione, Matera, Italy

The church of San Falcione is a rock church located in Matera. It is located in the area in front of the city, on the Murgia esplanade. Its construction dates back to the 9th century, with the name also reported as San Felicione, Cassione, Cassone, Cascione or Canione. From an architectural point of view, the various spaces have been dug into the calcarenite. It includes in particular two presbyteries; on one wall, inside the rock layer, the cathedra has been carved out . There are also traces of Byzantine-style frescoes, now in poor condition, depicting some saints (for example, two have been identified which portray Saint Nicholas) and the presentation of Jesus at the Temple. The Byzantine influence is also witnessed by a Greek inscription present in an internal niche, today barely visible, which reads "This Child created the heavens and the earth".
