Visit Chiesa di Santa Maria de Armenis, Matera, Italy

The rock church of Santa Maria de Armenis is a place of worship located within the Sassi of Matera. There is documentary evidence of the church as early as 1093, the year in which Pope Urban II stayed in Matera for several months, and during his stay he granted indulgences to the faithful visiting the church of Santa Maria de Armenis[1]. It is part of an ancient Benedictine monastery and seems to have been named thus following the settlement of Armenian communities in Matera.
