Visit
Chloride, Arizona
View Original Description
If it’s ghosts you’re searching for, Chloride might not be your place. But if visiting a fun, quirky Western town that is considered the oldest continuously inhabited mining town in the state is your slice of pie, c’mon down! Once a silver mining camp, prospectors first located mineral resources (including gold, lead, zinc, turquoise, and of course, silver) in the 1840s. The town eventually grew to a peak population of around 5,000 inhabitants--at one time, in fact, Chloride was the county seat. By 1917 the population had fallen to 2,000, and by 1944 it was nearly a ghost town.
Today, Chloride is a great place to visit for an afternoon. Take pictures with the Old West building facades or of the quirky, repurposed glass residents string across their gardens. There’s an old saloon and every Saturday, a cowboy gun show. And, up a canyon road, tinted rock faces frame famous murals painted by artist Roy Purcell. If you want a fun mining town experience, check out Chloride.

TIPS:
If you’re in a ghost-hunting sort of mood, the Brunswick Hotel and Bonelli House in nearby Kingman, Arizona, are reportedly haunted. And, if you’re planning on visiting the Hoover Dam, some say it has spectre residents, as many people died during its construction.
