Visit Chrzelice Castle Ruins, Chrzelice, Poland

Chrzelice Castle was the castle of the Dukes of Opole in the village of Chrzelice, Poland. Currently in a state of visible ruin. The first mention of a brick castle comes from 1380 on the occasion of a transaction between Henryk Niemodliński and Peter Heidenreich concerning land near the church in the Old Town near Biała . The first and most dominant element of the complex was a cylindrical tower erected in the first half of the 14th century. In 1532 it passed from the hands of the princes of Opole into the possession of Silesian knightly families, in 1559 it became the property of Wenzel Posadowski, and then it belonged to the Pruszkowski family (von Proskau). In 1605, a project was created to rebuild the fortifications around the castle by Hans Schneider von Lindau, but it was not implemented. In the 17th century it was rebuilt into a baroque palace. From 1769 the estate came into the possession of the Prussian state, and in the 19th century it was leased by the Heller family. Until 1945 it was the property of the Tiele-Winckler family from Moszna. The castle was built of brick on a tuft surrounded by marshes. It was founded on an irregular trapezoid plan, with a short north-eastern curtain. The peripheral walls were clasped with escarpments. In the western part of the courtyard there was a free-standing keep, destroyed in the early 17th century. Inside the walls, two quadrangular houses were built, placed in the southern and eastern corners. In the south-eastern curtain there was a gate.
