Visit Cocos Islands (Keeling), Australia

Midway between the west coast of Australia and Sri Lanka, lying in the Indian Ocean, are found the Cocos (or Keeling) Islands, a sparsely inhabited archipelago with 2 atolls formed from 27 coral islands. The cluster offers white sand beaches, clear azure skies and a tropical climate. The uncrowded dive sites provide some of the best SCUBA diving and snorkeling found anywhere. The crystal clear water affords visibility in the range of 25 meters and the water temperature is warm by any standard. Spectacular coral gardens provide a backdrop for schools of Giant Barracuda, Big-Eye Jacks, Rainbow Runners, Dog-Tooth Tuna and many other exotic and colorful varieties of fish. The crystalline waters are also inhabited by dolphin, turtles, manta rays and local legend has it, one very friendly Dugong, christened “Kat” by the locals. There are a number of named dive sites in the islands with monikers such as The Cabbage Patch (considered a “must-do” dive), Garden of Eden (known for very large fish), Two Caves (where Kat hangs out and the site of a Sri Lankan wreck), Fan Wall (where the Mantas are best seen) and Rose Wall (huge schools of Parrotfish). Air travel to the Cocos Islands is possible through the Western Australian city of Perth. A number of resorts operate on the 2 main islands and dive tours are easily arranged with local operators. In addition to the prolific diving opportunities visitors to the Cocos Islands also enjoy fishing, surfing, sailboarding and kitesurfing in this unspoiled paradise. Your dreams might include a dive trip to a pristine island grouping in the Indian Ocean where fish and other wildlife abound in endless coral reefs. Add a trip to the Cocos Islands to your list and start imaging how you will spend your days on and in the water and your nights gazing at perfect starlit skies.
