Cripta di Santa Maria della Palomba, Matera, Italy
View Original Description
The crypt, commonly called Palomba, is located near the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Palomba in Matera.
The space consists of a simple rectangular nave covered by a humpback vault. The rooms above, now almost completely collapsed, date back to 1645. On the rock wall against which the altar stands are frescoes of considerable importance, discovered in 1965 during a survey carried out by a group of scholars belonging to the La Scaletta circle. The frescoes depict a Madonna dressed in a red cloak, a Saint Nicholas with an ochre face, and a blessing Child. Other frescoes are located on a concave rock wall, likely the original apse of the crypt.
