Visit Delhi, India

Delhi, India is the name ascribed to The National Capital Territory of Delhi including the metropolitan area and the city of New Delhi, the national capital of India. Delhi has been inhabited for at least 2,500 years. The important government houses, national museums and art galleries are to be found in the city of New Delhi, established in the 1920’s just south of the old city. Delhi is often thought of as the jumping off point for tourists visiting other parts of India but travelers arriving at Delhi’s Indira Ghandi International Airport will find a rich and colorful history that begs exploration. Old Delhi is a mixture of twisting streets and alleys chock full of vendors offering everything from auto parts to fireworks in shops bursting at the seams with merchandise. The old city is also home to Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India and the Red Fort. The Red Fort sits inside the walled city of Old Delhi and was the previously home of the Imperial Family of India. Work on the massive building project began in 1638 and is considered to be a quintessential example of Mughal ingenuity and architecture. Various buildings inside the fort house museums and historical sites along with attention grabbing art work and construction techniques. Tourists in Old Delhi also find that visiting the ruins that surround the Qutab Minar, the world’s tallest brick minaret, is worthy of their attention. On the outskirts of the city are found the ruins of Tughlakabad, an entire ancient city with great high walls and massive rooms and passageways now in ruin. The deserted city was first established over 700 years ago by a governor of Turkish heritage and abandoned soon after it was built due to lack of water. Other interesting places that attract visitors are the Lodi Gardens, a large park with impressive displays of centuries old architecture and long deceased Pashun ruler’s tombs, Humayun’s Tomb, the final resting place of the Mughal Emperor Humayun and his family and The India Gate, the national monument of India. The primary Bazaars found in Delhi, Sarojini, Dilli Hat and Connaught Place are packed with merchandise and indigenous arts and crafts. Searching for the right souvenirs or decorations to take home may best be accomplished in these traditional marketplaces. The embassy district and the various government buildings in New Delhi also contain interesting sites of historical and cultural significance. You might consider adding a trip to Delhi, India to your list to experience a city that bridges the worlds of the ancient and the modern and successfully combines its rich and diverse cultures.
