Visit Desert Power & Water Co. Electric Power Plant, Kingman, Arizona

Desert Power & Water Co. Electric Power Plant is a great place to visit if you want a dose of local history. Built in 1907-08, the oil-fired power plant was considered one of the largest steam electric power plants in the Western U.S., until Hoover Dam took over the power supply in 1938. After spending time vacant and as a salvage yard, a group of locals called the “Powerhouse Gang” got together in the 1980s to renovate and restore the building. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the building belongs to the city of Kingman, Arizona, and houses its chamber of commerce, tourism office, visitor center and Route 66 Museum.
