Elizabeth Blackwell MD Memorial, Asheville, North Carolina
View Original Description
Memorial Iron bench with a bower of medicinal herbs along Patton Ave. Elizabeth Blackwell, MD was first woman awarded a medical degree in the United States.
Fabricated in 1999, this sculpture, which includes a bench, was created by James Barnhill and Joe Miller as a monument to Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell (1821-1910), the first woman to be awarded a medical degree in the United States. Blackwell, a native of North Carolina, began her studies in Asheville in 1845 under the guidance of Dr. John Dickson, in his office, which was located across the street from present site of the monument. The monument consists of a metal bench with a seat shaped like vines and ginkgo leaves, with an arbor of wild yam, virginia creeper, sycamore, sweet gum maple, oak sassafras, witch hazel, and tulip poplar leaves above the seat, and a medicinal symbol below a bust of Dr. Blackwell. The monument is part of the Asheville Urban Trail, a network of historic sites in Downtown Asheville that commemorate notable historical events and people.
