Visit Fiesta de la Santa Cruz, Santiago de Querétaro, Mexico

The Fiesta de la Santa Cruz (12 – 15 September) in Querétaro, Mexico, is a syncretistic religious celebration with processions and dances and many thousands of active participants from the entire region. Central location of the celebration is the church of La Santa Cruz (Holy Cross), the oldest Christian temple in Querétaro and site of a mythic battle between christianised and traditional tribes (1531). The elaborate head dresses of the dancers are very costly, and the feathers -- in absence of tradicional quetzal feathers dancers use feathers from pheasants, cocks, turkeys, parrots etc. -- are collected over a lifetime and handed down from one generation to the next.
