In the foothills oaks and chaparral at elevation 1,500 feet (457 m) is Foothills Visitor Center. Focus here is on the Sierran foothills, the most biologically diverse area of these parks.
Spring brings spectacular wildflower shows to the foothills. Summer can be hot and dry, and hikers should carry and drink plenty of water. Beware of swift rivers, poison oak, tick, and rattlesnakes in any season.
It's located on the Generals Highway 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the Ash Mountain Entrance.
Crystal Cave tour tickets: Starting on May 11, 2013 Crystal Cave tickets sold only here until 3:45, and at the Lodgepole Visitor Center (in summer); tickets are NOT sold at the cave.
Wilderness Permits: Get local wilderness permits at the Wilderness Office (behind the visitor center) Monday-Saturday; Sundays at the visitor center. Self-issue local wilderness permits available outside startingSeptember 29, 2013.
Services: Books, maps, hats, educational materials for sale. Bear canisters for sale or rent. Accessible restrooms. Pay phone. First aid.
