Fort Church Ruins, Saint-Pierre, Martinique
View Original Description
The Fort Church, sometimes also called Saint-Pierre Church, was the oldest church in Saint-Pierre, on the island of Martinique, located between the streets of Dr Deschiens and de l'Église, in the Fort district. Destroyed by the eruption of Mount Pelée in May 8, 1902, its ruins are today a historical monument and a major tourist attraction in the city. The church was full of worshipers at the time of its destruction.
The current ruins correspond to the reconstruction of 1899. Currently, all that remains is the location of the separate bell tower, the chevet, the ambulatory and the remains of the high altar, sections of columns, the remains of statues and the stairs leading to the main entrance and the side aisles, the central staircase corresponding to the nave occupying a predominant place.
The block of the pediment propelled about ten meters from the facade, the columns thrown across the street, the blackened foundations and the thickness of the overturned walls bear witness to the violence with which the church was struck.
