Fort Hayes, Ascension Island, St. Helena
View Original Description
Completed in the 1848 and remodelled in 1880, Fort Hayes is now Ascension Islands best preserved Victorian coastal artillery fort. Further work was carried out during the rearming of the fort in the First and Second World Wars. It is now maintained by the local historical society who curate a good collection of artefacts inside.
Outside the C19 fort is an additional magazine for ammunition storage which also saw use as an emergency hospital for the garrison. I believe this part of development would have taken place before or during the First World War modernisation.
