George A. Kohler Shipwreck, Ramp 27, Hatteras Island, North Carolina
View Original Description
This shipwreck is the four-masted schooner known as the G.A Kohler. One of the last large sailing vessels and built in 1919. The G.A Kohler set sail for the last time in August of 1933. The ship was sailing south along the Outer Banks when a hurricane passed through causing the ship to crash onto the beach. All crew members were rescued, but the ship lay stranded for a decade. During WWII the ship was burned for her iron fittings. This shipwreck is just one of hundreds that have crashed along the North Carolina coast, which gained the name the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
With the shifting sands, shipwrecks will be uncovered and recovered over and over again. The G.A Kohler is sometimes visible on the beach at Ramp 27 located South of Salvo and North of Avon.
