Ghent, Belgium is a city with an ancient history that has evolved into a modern, thriving metropolitan area. Although evidence exists that man inhabited the area around Ghent as long ago as the Stone Age, the recorded history of the city begins in 630 AD when the area was first named to recognize the confluence of the 2 rivers that isolated the land serving as the site for the construction of a new Abby. From 1000 to 1550 the city was considered one of the most important in Europe. A Medieval castle surrounded by a moat, the imposing Cathedral, three Beguinages (historic, walled clusters buildings used by the Beguine nuns of Belgium) and a Belfry all serve to mark the city’s historical status. Ghent, today, is the capital of Belgium’s East Flanders Province. Walking tours of Ghent are a great way to see the city along with tours designed for bicycles, motorized scooters or even by boat.
