González-Alvarez House (Oldest House), St. Augustine, Florida
View Original Description
The González-Alvarez House is more commonly referred to as the Oldest House. It started in the 18th Century as the one-story, flat-roofed coquina (soft limestone containing shell and coral fragments quarried locally on Anastasia Island) dwelling of the Tomas González y Hernández family. Tomas was an artilleryman at the Castillo de San Marcos fort. Subsequent owners put glass in the windows and added a second story plus a doorway to the street as the house originally opened only to the courtyard in the Spanish style. The house was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
