Visit Grand-Lac-Salé Ecological Reserve, Anticosti Island, Quebec, Canada

The Grand-Lac-Salé ecological reserve is located on the south coast of Anticosti Island and encompasses the Grand Lac Salé from which it takes its name. The reserve protects the largest lagoon and salt marsh in the Anticosti-Minganie region. The Grand-Lac-Salé ecological reserve is located in the south-central part of Anticosti Island, in the municipality of L'Île-d'Anticosti. The bedrock of the island is composed of sedimentary rocks between 400 and 600 million years old. The reserve is primarily located in the Chicotte Formation , which is composed of Lower Silurian reef limestone. The forest is mainly composed of fir to white spruce. The flora of the reserve is very varied. There are many species likely to be designated threatened or vulnerable in Quebec, such as the bulbous arethusa (Arethusa bulbosa ), the Host sedge (Carex hostiana), the yellow lady's-slipper variety with flat petals (Cypripedium parviflorum var. pubescens), the linear-leaved sundew (Drosera linearis) and the mountain xyris (Xyris montana). The Grand-Lac-Salé ecological reserve was established by decree on January 10, 1996.
