Guberača Fortress, Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina
View Original Description
Guberača Fortress was an Austro-Hungarian fortified military post east of Mostar in the Podveležja region. It is located at 624 meters above sea level.
It was built after the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mostar was a rear stronghold and had 19 fortified buildings, the most in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was a belt fortress, one of four built by Austria-Hungary in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
For the needs of access and touring this military station, and those on Svetigora (877 m) and Merdžan glavi (802 m), but also for the purpose of exploiting timber, Austria-Hungary, with its existing professional staff, built a road from Mostar along Fortica. They did not engage the local population. It led via Šipovec to Brasina. A branch road led to Merdžan glavi. It was also used for extracting forest timber from Velež. The road was paved after World War II, and it is said that this was the merit of Džemal Bijedić.
