Hobart, the capital of the Australian island State of Tasmania, is the center of commerce and finance for Tasmania as well as the home port for Antarctic operations of the Australian and French governments. Hobart is a harbourside city located at the estuary of the Derwent River before it empties into the Tasman Sea through a series of bays. Hobart is a trendy city, used as a base to explore the beautiful natural surroundings of southern Tasmania with an interesting history. Cafes, galleries, art studios and restaurants abound at Salamanca Place, a collection of 19th century sandstone warehouses originally constructed to support the whaling trade. The Salamanca Market held every Saturday is a celebration of Tasmania’s creative artisans, unique culture, talented musicians and diverse production of good things to eat and drink. Life on the island can be studied at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery which celebrates Tasmania’s history, art and culture highlighted by Tasmanian Aboriginal Gallery, Ningenngeh Tunapry. Ningenneh Tunapry celebrates the indigenous cultural history of the native Aboriginals. Other exhibits include an interactive “Islands to Ice” display and an exquisite collection of 19th century artwork. The Museum of Old and New Art opened in 2011 and its exhibits include ancient Egyptian mummies and thought provoking contemporary art. The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is a place for recreation and enjoyment of its extensive plant collection as well as the site of the State’s annual tulip festival. Hobart is firmly rooted in its history as an English penal colony established in1803 with monuments and historical sites memorializing those humble beginnings. The city is popular with yachtsmen worldwide as the terminus of the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, part of an annual summer festival. The surrounding mountains and bays call to outdoorsmen with every interest including hikers, cyclists and fishermen. Understanding that Hobart is a maritime city, all manner of water activities to include sightseeing cruises and water skiing along with opportunities for sailing and power boating is readily available. The access to the ocean also contributes to the local cuisine as scalefish, shellfish and crustaceans dominate the menus alongside ethnic specialties.
