Visit Hawai'i's ONLY remaining Rice Mill (listed on the National Register of Historic Places), where the past meets the present. Tucked away on a working wetland taro farm on Kaua'i's dramatically scenic North Shore, the Hoʻopulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill is found within a National Wildlife Refuge, usually not accessible to the public. Learn about Hawai'i's agriculture and cultural history, view endangered native water birds, and explore the cultivation and uses of taro, a traditional Polynesian food source. Then enjoy a complementary picnic lunch featuring unique items prepared with taro grown on the very farm you visit. Tour Duration: Tours are offered Wednesdays at 10am. Check in at 9:45am and tour ends approximately 1:30pm, 3.5-4hours. Tour start promptly at 10am at the Haraguchi Rice Mill Kiosk. It is located at 5-5070A Kuhio Highway, next to Hanalei Taro & Juice Co., near the entrance to Hanalei Town. Park in the area behind the Rice Mill Kiosk. Restrooms are located near the parking lot. Limited restroom facilities are available on tour. Tours are conducted rain or shine. Please call 808-651-3399 if you get lost or have any questions. Tour Description: Tour includes 3.5 hours, smoothie, farm fresh tastings, hands on activities, lunch, drinks, desserts, endangered birds & wildlife observations in areas that are normally closed to the public. Costs are $87/adult & we have special children rates. (please inform us of any food allergies). Tour Policy: Please be prepared for rain and/or sun and two short walks over mostly level ground on grass that may be damp, wet or slightly muddy. The Haraguchi family has restored the mill three times; after a fire in 1930, then again after Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and Hurricane Iniki in 1992. The mill ceased operating in 1960 when Kaua`i's rice industry collapsed. A nonprofit organization was formed to preserve and interpret the mill, which has been visited by thousands of school children and adults in the past 35 years. Please RESPECT residents & endangered wildlife- NO Public access into the farm & Rice Mill unless through EXCLUSIVE GUIDED TOURS. Tours are by reservation only, however you can visit us at the Rice Mill kiosk for gift shop items located at Hanalei Taro & Juice Co and farm fresh family dishes at 5-5070A Kuhio Hwy in Hanalei open daily 11am-3pm.
