Inspiration Point (Yellowstone), Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
View Original Description
Turn right on a two-way road that takes you to this viewpoint. Enjoy the wheelchair-accessible view along the edge of the parking lot. The original Inspiration Point overlook tumbled into the Canyon during an earthquake in the 1970s. Recently, because of unsafe conditions, the walkway has been shortened once more. The views of the canyon, however, remain spectacular, both upstream and downstream. You can watch the acrobatic flights of birds, and smell the sulfur from hydrothermal features far below.
The point was originally named Promontory Point in 1878 by W. H. Holmes but later given the name of Inspiration Point by G.L. Henderson, a park concessionaire in 1887. The point is a natural observation point over the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
