Visit Kastro (Ioannina), Greece

Kastro, the old quarter of Ioannina, Greece. Ioannina was founded on the shore of Lake Pamvotis in the 6th century CE by Byzantine emperor Justinian. The Ottoman Turks wrested control in 1430 CE. The city was a leading cultural and artistic center. In 1789 CE the Albanian warlord Ali Pasha (1740-1822 CE) made Ioaninna the capital of his fiefdom. He enforced the law using brutal techniques such as mass drownings and torture. In 1822 CE the Ottomans tricked him into taking refuge in the monastery on the island in the lake where they killed him. The Greeks liberated Ioannina in 1912 CE.
