Visit Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Isla Mujeres, Mexico is a small island off the coast of Quintana Roo State near the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The island, which is 7 km long and 1 km wide, is reachable by ferry from the city of Cancun and is visited by day trippers and overnight visitors year round. The island has a rich history replete with stories of pirates and buccaneers. The Mayans reportedly used the island for traditional fertility ceremonies and the name, Isla Mujeres, translated into English, means “Island of Women”. The Caribbean island was considered to be sacred in the Mayan culture and the island was christened with its current name after Spanish explorers took note of the many cult images of goddesses that were found upon exploration. The island boasts top-tier hotels, clubs and restaurants with views of the Caribbean Sea. In addition to swimming and relaxing on the sandy beaches, the island contains Garrafon Marine Park, an ideal place to snorkel or scuba dive in a coral reef with multitudes of tropical fish. The downtown area provides numerous shops where beachwear, souvenirs and crafts made of wood and conch shells are readily available. For a day or a week, a visit to Isla Mujeres might just be that excursion to an unspoiled tropical paradise of which you have been dreaming.
