Visit Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai is the fourth largest island in the Hawaiian chain and is sometimes called the “Garden Isle,” as a nod to the verdant valleys that cascade between jagged mountain cliffs and soaring peaks. Kauai is the oldest and northernmost island in the Hawaiian Islands, magically shaped by time and the elements. Tropical rainforests, scenic rivers and tumbling waterfalls are some of the hallmarks of the distinctive landscape. Like other islands in the chain, Kauai is a land of contrasts. One of the wettest places on earth can be found on the east side of Mount Waialeale only a few miles from the desert landscape of the Poipu resort area. Much of Kauai is unspoiled and the unforgettable beauty of some of the remote areas can only be seen by boat or from aircraft. From the soaring cliffs of the Napali Coast to the eye-popping expanse of Waimea Canyon the island of Kauai boasts a broad variety of outdoor activities. Counted among the favorite pursuits of visitors are kayaking on the Wailua River, snorkeling and SCUBA diving at any number of unforgettable locations, hiking the trails of Kokee State Park, ziplining above Kauai’s lush valleys, sailing or rafting on the Napali coast, golfing world class courses, horseback riding or just lazing in the sun on un-crowded white sand beaches. For many visitors, the island’s allure is the laid-back atmosphere and rich culture found in its small towns and single-lane bridges that make a visit to Kauai truly timeless. The island is divided into 5 distinct regions, each with its own identity. The West Side of the island is home to some of the historic highlights and scenic wonders in addition to charming small towns. The “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, Waimea Canyon is located on the west side with its panoramic views of crested buttes, rugged crags and deep valley gorges. Waimea Town displays a statue of Captain James Cook as a monument to his discovery of the island in 1778. The art capital of Kauai, Hanapepe Town has been the location for a number of Hollywood films. Kokee State Park boasts 45 miles of hiking trails. The South Shore of Kauai is where the Poipu resort area is found. Poipu Beach has been named America’s Best Beach by the Travel Channel. Some of Kauai’s best shopping areas, restaurants and golf courses are located close to Poipu on the south shore. Humpback Whales, Green Sea Turtles and the occasional Hawaiian Monk Seal are regular visitors to the waters off Poipu. Lihue is the commercial center of the island and the location of the main airport along with Nawiliwili Harbor, Kauai’s shipping center and cruise ship port. Lihue’s Kalapaki Beach is enjoyed by surfers, bodyboarders and windsurfers. The first class Kauai Lagoons golf facility is located in Lihue and the picturesque Wailua Falls is found just outside town. The East Side of Kauai is known as the “Coconut Coast”. In addition to a number of resorts that can be found on the east side surrounded by groves of coconut trees, the region boasts historic places, unforgettable beaches and nearby attractions. The Wailua River State Park is located here with Opeakaa Falls and the Fern Grotto among the primary attractions. A number of outfitters offer kayaking along the river. A succession of pristine beaches attracts surfers, sunbathers and snorkelers. The North Shore presents a rugged setting with beautiful beaches and spectacular ocean-side cliffs. The town of Hanalei is the gateway to the incredibly dramatic and beautiful Napali coast. This 17-mile stretch of coastline is lined with soaring cliffs divided by lush green valleys, cascading waterfalls and sea caves. While not able to be toured by automobile visitors can hike or take a helicopter or boat tour to view this breathtaking natural wonder. The North Shore is also home to the upscale Princeville resort area and the site of 2 world class golf courses. The Prince Golf Course at Princeville is often found on lists of the world’s best courses. Accommodations on Kauai range from quaint bed and breakfast retreats to rental homes and condos as well as world class resorts. Kauai is served by inter-island flights from Oahu, Maui and the Big Island as well as from mainland US airports.
