Key West, Florida is the most southern point in the Continental U.S.A. and only 90 miles from the coast of Cuba. Life on this serene little island revolves around the water with salt water fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling on top of the to-do lists of visitors. Diving and snorkeling the coral reefs and wrecked ships off Key West is a favored excursion whether to observe the abundant tropical fish or hunt for treasure. Fly fishing for Tarpon in the backcountry or Deep Sea fishing for the abundant game fish found off the coast is readily accessible.
Your evenings will probably be spent on or near Duval Street, dining at the fine island restaurants or hanging out at one of the bars made famous by Ernest Hemingway where he either imbibed, referenced in his writing or both. In fact, there is a museum in Key West dedicated to the author in the very building where he lived and practiced his craft for 10 years all the while enjoying the bounty of Key West. The famous American playwright, Tennessee Williams, is thought to have written his first draft of “A Streetcar Named Desire” in Key West where he owned a home and has a theater in town named in his honor.
The tiny island (approximately 13.5 km2), south of Miami in the Straits of Florida, is reachable by car on U.S. Highway 1 that traverses the Florida Keys and terminates at mile marker 0 in Key West, or alternatively by boat or the planes that land at its international airstrip.
