Visit Le Gouvernail (The Rudder), Bonifacio, Corsica
Built in 1880 by French military engineers, Le Gouvernail (The Rudder) is located by the marine cemetery at the far end of the peninsula. This military site is a long tunnel of 168 steps dug into the cliff. And underground room at the bottom of the stairs is 10 m above sea level. Below, the shape of Le Gouvernail (The Rudder) inspired the local fishermen to give its name.
