Visit Lima, Peru

Lima, capital of the country of Peru and its most populated city, was founded nearly 500 years ago by Spanish conquistador, Francisco Pizarro. The metropolitan area supports 8.5 million people and mixes colonial architecture with modern buildings quite eloquently. The local cuisine is based upon the abundant and high quality seafood that is found offshore Lima. The city has some very distinct neighborhoods such as Barranco, a bohemian beachside community with significant offerings for nightlife; Centro Historico, where the central squares, Presidential Palace, historic architecture and traditional shopping areas can be found; Miraflores, the location of upscale housing, hotels, restaurants and clubs that attract tourists. Museums, such as the Museso de Oro, focused on gold and metal artifacts, Museo de Armas, exhibiting historically significant armaments and weapons and Museo de la Inquisicion, displaying torture elements related to the Spanish Inquisition are just a few of the facilities that command visitor’s attention. Cerro Azul is a popular seaside resort nearby that offers surfing lessons and a great beach (named in the Beach Boy’s song “Surfing Safari”) in this historic fishing village that exhibits the remains of mud huts dating to the pre-Inca period. The nearby resort area of Chorrillos offers classy beach oriented resorts, picanterias (Peruvian restaurants), historical monuments and a planetarium.
