The goldmining town of Llanelly was once home to a thriving community of Welsh-speaking migrants. It's locatd between Bendigo and Dunolly, and is 5 km north-east of the town of Tarnagulla. The discovery of gold in these cities in the 1850s caused the area to receive an influx of migrants from all around the world. The village formed in around 1860, and it was given the name Llanelly by several Welsh miners. Alluvial gold was discovered in 1865 and it was reported that at one time all the fields in the Llanelly area had a population of 20,000 people.
