London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom. London is a very diverse city displaying a broad spectrum of cultures and religions with over 300 languages spoken by its inhabitants. The history of London extends to well before Roman times. Situated picturesquely on the banks of the River Thames the city boasts medieval architecture standing alongside modern buildings and large areas of open space and parkland within a densely populated metropolitan area. The “City of London”, the core and ancient center of London as it exists today is but one of 33 boroughs that make up the modern city. Within the city center visitors will find remnants of the original walled fortress along with castles, such as the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the iconic London Bridge. Other points of interest to visitors in London include the London Eye (Millennium Wheel), a 147 meter ferris wheel on the south bank of the Thames affording a bird’s eye view of the city; Madame Tussaud’s famous waxworks museum; The Science Museum in South Kensington founded in 1857 and home to an over 300,000 item collection; The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich incorporating the Royal Observatory and the 17thcentury Queen’s House. London is served by five airports including the busiest international airport in the world, Heathrow Airport. Once visitors have arrived they will find a dynamic system of public transportation that includes trains, buses, taxis, car rentals, the “tube” (subway), boats and light rail. One of the world’s leading cities with global influence in commerce, art, education, entertainment, fashion, healthcare and transportation, London was the world’s most populous city from the early 1800’s until 1925 when it was overtaken by New York City.
