Visit Louillia Shipwreck, Gordon Reef, Egypt

The wreck of the Lovilla (or Lullia) can be seen above the water on Gordon Reef in the straits of Tiran, in the Red Sea, near Sharm el Sheikh. The Lovilla is a Panamanian freighter built in Sweden and launched in May 1952. On a voyage from Aqaba to Suez in ballast, she ran hard onto Gordon Reef in the Straits of Tiran on 29 September 1981. The crew safely abandoned ship four days later and the vessel is still found on top of the reef. Built as the ANTONIA in Sweden 1952, the 3461 ton freighter had dimensions of 107m x 14m with a draught of 8.5m. She was renamed the Zschoau until 1978, and then finally the Loullia. This wreck was a fairly intact ship sat atop the reef, since then, another ship has ploughed into it, cutting it in half, and every year, it lurches ever more precariously, threatening to finally drop to the depths and create another potential dive site. This commercial freighter is easily seen from far away as it stands out more than 10 meters above the sea. Divers are waiting for this ship to completely collapse as it is not safe at the moment to explore its interior areas.
