Visit Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre, South Africa

Located in a rocky landscape within Mapungubwe National Park, this centre won South African architect Peter Rich the 2009 World Building of the Year Award at the World Architecture Festival. The celebrated design is constructed with "a long-forgotten vaulting technique that bricklayers from North Africa took to Catalonia, and which was used by architects such as Antoni Gaudi", according to Rich. Mud bricks were formed using soil from the construction site and only 5% of additional cement to create a clay mixture.
