Visit Marrakesh (Marrakech), Morocco (UNESCO sites)

As with a number of other North African cities, Marrakesh (Marrakech) is comprised of an old, fortified area along with a modern city. The largest traditional souk in Morocco is found in Marrakesh, the Djeema El-Fna, inhabited by merchants, dancers, story-tellers, tattoo artists, magicians and musicians by day and then transformed into a huge open air restaurant at night as the food vendors move into the square. Limitless shopping for bargains can be found at the various marketplaces and visitors to Marrakesh find touring tanneries another interesting experience. The Koutoubia Mosque is an often visited site with its Minaret held in the same regard by Moroccans as the Eiffel Tower is thought of by the French. The Saadian Tombs, which were left untouched for hundreds of years until they were rediscovered in the 20th century are beautifully decorated with Moroccan tiles and worthy of inspection. The city of Marrakesh also boasts the Majorelle Gardens, a park-like botanical treasury with plants from the world wide with the Museum of Islamic Art, another of the cities attractions, also found within the property. Beautiful art and architecture abound in Marrakesh. The Dar Si Said Museum houses Moroccan artifacts representative of the best that Morocco has offered through the eons in the way of ceramics, pottery, clothing, carpets and wood crafts. The Musee’ de Marrakesh at Place Ben Yousef and the Museum of Moroccan Arts are two other houses of Moroccan relics that occupy 19th century palaces and display iconic items from this important North African country. The El Bahia Palace and the El Badi Palace are definitely worth visiting with their extensive gardens filled with the fragrance of jasmine and orange. The exotic city of Marrakesh, Morocco has been immortalized in song, in film and has served its turn as the playground of the rich and famous. Marrakesh is packed with Riads and Dars (old stately houses converted to accommodate tourists). Consider making one of these grand properties your home away from home while in Marrakesh. Spending time in Marrakesh may be the trip of which you have been dreaming. Put it on your list and start working the planning process.
