Visit Mexico City (Ciudad de México), Mexico (UNESCO sites)

Situated 2400 meters above sea level, the capital city of Mexico, Mexico City, radiates from its main square, Zocalo, which serves as the center of present day life and the nexus of the history of the country. Much like the rest of Mexico, The Zocalo combines the old and the new in perfect harmony. Similarly, Chapultepec Park, one of the largest parks within a city anywhere is preserved just as you would have found it hundreds of years ago yet it offers attractions and museums appropriate for the entire family along with its function as an ecological preserve within this vast megalopolis. As evidence of the cultural significance of the city there are literally hundreds of museums that are worthy of a visit but two in particular stand out: Museo Nacional de Antopologia is home to the country’s best archeological displays in its many halls and offers exhibits that pre-date the Hispanic culture. The Palacio Nacional, located downtown, displays 18 years of Diego Rivera murals among its prolific art collection. Since Mexico City was once home to the Aztec civilization of Tenochtitlan the city is ripe with archeological sites worthy of your attention. The Templo Mayor (the great pyramid of Tenochtitlan), dedicated to the Aztec Gods of Rain and War, is but one of the many sites that display ancient artifacts and exhibits designed to teach about the origins and customs of the Aztecs. But Mexico City is a modern city, too. World-class restaurants, internationally acclaimed hotels and shopping along with a vibrant night life including musical and theatrical performances can provide opportunities for relaxation after days spent exploring the cultural offerings. A visit to this national capital city steeped in ancient culture can be a dream come true.
