Monumento Natural Islotes de Puñihuil, Chiloé Island, Chile
View Original Description
The Islotes de Puñihuil Natural Monument is a wild area protected by the State of Chile, located 28 kilometers southwest of Ancud, in the Los Lagos Region.
It consists of three islets located off the western coast of the Isla Grande de Chiloé.
The monument is notable for being the only known location where Humboldt and Magellanic penguins share a breeding site. It is also a breeding area for other species, such as the gray cormorant and the kelp gull. It is also possible to find chungungos or sea cats.
The site is a tourist attraction in the commune of Ancud and guided visits to the islets are carried out, but since this activity is disruptive for birds, since 2009 there is a municipal ordinance that restricts the number of daily visits and the conditions in that these are made.
