Murgia Regional Park traces of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times. ime has shaped the landscape by carving the soft rock into ravines, valleys and caves that were inhabited during the Paleolithic period, such as the famous Bat Cave. Since 2007 the definition " Sassi di Matera " in the UNESCO World Heritage list has been expanded to include "The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera " The Basilicata Region established the Murgia Materana Park in 1990 with the aim of protecting, recovering and enhancing the Murgia Materana area, which is home to prehistoric and historical archaeology, and of safeguarding and enhancing the rock habitat and the heritage of the rock churches within the municipalities of Matera and Montescaglioso.
