Good food, great music and a culture of grand celebrations combine to make New Orleans, Louisiana one of the must visit cities in the U.S.A.. New Orleans was a cultural gateway to North America and the peoples of Europe and Africa have intertwined their lives and customs with those that already occupied this southern outpost in the New World. The inhabitants with roots back to colonial days are considered to be “Creoles” and were very different from residents in the English colonies of North America with unusual accents and unique customs. The “Big Easy” as New Orleans had been nicknamed is home to the annual Mardi Gras celebration that includes parades that wind their way through the city during the weeks that lead up to Ash Wednesday each year culminating in the “Fat Tuesday” celebration. Mardi Gras, as is much of the culture engrained in New Orleans, was brought to the city by its French settlers. New Orleans is also famous for its food. Landmark restaurants, their popular dishes and the history behind them is part of what makes this city great. Music is indelibly etched into the heritage and culture of New Orleans. Jazz, Zydeco, Cajun and Funk are all part of the music landscape. The bars never close and the clubs in the French Quarter are always hopping with music that swings 7 days each week. Many historic homes and buildings with their distinctive architectural styles representing various time periods also attract admirers and are scattered throughout the city. New Orleans also boasts over 45 museums covering displays of fine art, nature, military interests and of course, Mardi Gras. If you have ever dreamed of reveling along with the crowd at Mardi Gras and hoping to walk away with some beads tossed by one of the Krewes then a trip to New Orleans needs to be on your list. Even if you can’t make it for Mardi Gras all the other wonderful offerings of New Orleans makes this city worthy of your consideration.
