Visit Old Sugar Mill of Koloa, Kauai, Hawaii

The Old Sugar Mill of Kōloa was part of the first commercially successful sugar plantation in Hawaiʻi, which was founded in Kōloa in 1835 by Ladd & Company. This was the beginning of what would become Hawaii's largest industry. Ancient Polynesians were the first to bring sugar cane to Hawai’i. Starting with its first cane seeding in 1835, Koloa Plantation was the first in Hawai’i to successfully mill cane commercially for export. It set the precedent for free housing and medical benefits for its immigrant employees from China, Japan, East and West Germany, Portugal and the Philippines. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark on December 29, 1962. A stone chimney and foundations remain from 1840.
