Oriental Shipwreck (The Boiler Wreck), Pea Island, North Carolina
View Original Description
A Federal transport during the Civil War, the steamship Oriental has been grounded in her present position since 1862. The ship was barely a year old when she foundered. At a little over 200’ and rated for 1200 tons, she included some of the latest technology. Steel-hulled, she was pushed through the water by a steam driven screw propeller, far more efficient than paddle wheels. Typical of the steamships of the day, the Oriental was schooner rigged with two masts.
Local rumor has it that some of the area's largest fish make their home in the Oriental's rusty remains. You can see the exposed boiler and smokestack in the ocean surf off Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, opposite the Self-Guided Nature Trail parking lot.
