Visit Perth, Western Australia

The city of Perth, Australia is located in the state of Western Australia on the far west coast of the country. Situated alongside the Swan River, the city centre lies 20km from the Indian Ocean. Perth bustles with activity as it is the economic engine of Western Australia and its cultural centre. The location on the Swan River allowed for relative safety during colonial times, compared to being right on the coast but provides good access to the coastal port as the river is an excellent way to move goods back and forth from the city centre. Much of Perth was originally built using convict labor and these humble beginnings are memorialized in some of Perth's remaining historic buildings. Today, the river and surrounding area provides a scenic outlook for the city of Perth as well as a place for recreational activities. The surrounding area had significant historical meaning to the Aborigines of the region. The Swan River was ostensibly created by a large mythical snake known as the Waggyl, wiggling its way across the landscape, according to Aboriginal folklore. Winter came with the rains filling the empty channel, thus creating the waterway known today as "The Swan River”. There are a number of attractions and activities in Perth's city centre, many of which are focused around the picturesque river. Visitors can enjoy one of the many cruises which operate along the river, some offering dining and music as cruisers spend a few hours touring in and around the city. Panoramic views of Perth and the river abound. A visit to Kings Park and Botanical Garden allows for usage of many lookouts and vantage points. The Park is also home to Australian War Memorials. Tourists may include exploration of the river by walking or cycling their way along the foreshore on one of the paths provided or by participation in active water sports. The river also provides an excellent backdrop to enjoy while dining as many restaurants have excellent river views to accompany delicious meals. Opportunities abound to purchase souvenirs, Aboriginal art, crafts, fashion, beach wear, jewelry, cameras and high tech items from shopping malls and department stores. Some of the most popular shopping areas include The Hay Street Mall, Murray Street Mall, Raine Square, Forest Chase, Barrack Street and Kings Street. Visitors may also include visits to some of Perth's attractions including the Perth Zoo and the Old Mill, just a short ferry ride from the city, as well as Barracks Arch easily accessible by public transportation. Long relaxing walks along clean, sandy beaches, swimming in the surf on a warm sunny day, or perhaps lazing on a beach towel while watching the world go is accomplished by visiting the Sunset Coast of Perth. The Sunset Coast is a long stretch of scenic coastline with beach oriented suburbs. Many of the beaches are popular for their safe swimming, walking and cycling paths, as well as beach side dining spots. Within walking distance of the beaches are a number of cafes, many offering alfresco dining, and perfect for the Perth summer climate. The Sunset Coast draws its name from its glorious sunsets. A day at the beach in Perth might end by watching the dramatic sunset as it melts into the Indian Ocean. Nearby is the Sunset Hinterland.
